How to Diagnose and Replace an Epson Printhead

How to Diagnose and Replace an Epson Printhead

Is Your Epson Printer Producing Streaky Prints or No Ink at All?

A failing printhead is one of the most common — and most costly — issues Epson printer owners face. If you're seeing horizontal banding, missing colours, or a "No Ink" error even with full cartridges, your printhead may need to be cleaned or replaced. This guide walks you through diagnosis and replacement step by step.

At 123 Distribution, we're a veteran-owned business supplying professional-grade printer parts across Canada. We believe in straight talk and practical guidance — so let's get to it.

Step 1: Run a Nozzle Check

Before replacing anything, confirm the printhead is the problem:

  1. Go to your printer's control panel → Maintenance → Print Head Nozzle Check.
  2. Print the nozzle check pattern on plain white paper.
  3. Examine the pattern. Missing segments or broken lines indicate clogged or failing nozzles.

Warning: Do not skip this step. Replacing a printhead unnecessarily is an expensive mistake.

Step 2: Run Printhead Cleaning Cycles

If the nozzle check shows partial blockages, try cleaning first:

  1. Go to Maintenance → Print Head Cleaning → select all colours → run the cycle.
  2. Re-run the nozzle check after each cycle.
  3. Repeat up to 3 times. If no improvement after 3 cycles, proceed to replacement.

Caution: Excessive cleaning cycles waste ink and can damage a marginal printhead further.

Step 3: Know When to Replace

Replace the printhead when:

  • Nozzle check fails after 3 cleaning cycles
  • You see a "Printhead is damaged" error on the control panel
  • Ink smears immediately after printing
  • The printer powers on but will not begin a print job

Step 4: Order the Correct Replacement Part

For compatible Epson wide-format and industrial models, the Epson Printhead is the OEM replacement part you need. Always verify your printer model against the part number before ordering.

Step 5: Replace the Printhead

Tools needed: Lint-free gloves, a clean lint-free cloth, and the replacement printhead.

  1. Power off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  2. Open the printer cover and allow the printhead carriage to move to the centre access position (if it doesn't move on its own, consult your service manual).
  3. Carefully disconnect the ink tubes and ribbon cables attached to the printhead. Note their positions before disconnecting — a photo helps.
  4. Unscrew or unclip the printhead from the carriage and lift it straight out.
  5. Install the new printhead in reverse order. Ensure all connections are firm and the ink tubes are seated fully.
  6. Close the cover, plug in, and power on the printer.
  7. Run the printer's Initial Ink Charge sequence if prompted, then re-run a nozzle check to confirm the installation.

Warning: Never touch the nozzle plate or electrical contacts on the printhead. Static discharge or contamination will damage the new part immediately.

Tips from the Field

  • Wear lint-free gloves throughout the entire process.
  • If ink tubes are stiff or brittle, inspect them for cracks before reconnecting — cracked tubes cause air ingestion and printing failures.
  • Keep a record of your printhead replacement date for maintenance scheduling.
